Abolition:  A Commemoration

Friday, March 2nd 11:30 am to 1:00 pm

Two hundred years ago, the British Parliament voted to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire. William Wilberforce tirelessly led the campaign for abolition. Every year for twenty years Wilberforce brought the bill for abolition to the floor of the House of Commons. Every year, his bill was defeated - the slave trade was considered essential to the British economy. But finally, on February 23, 1807, the bill for abolition passed, and in March the king made the bill law. The tide had turned largely due to the persistence, passion, and devotion of William Wilberforce.

Come hear the story of how this great statesman changed history.

Location:  Our commemoration will take place at Miller Chapel, Princeton Theological Seminary.

Special Guest Speaker:  US Congressman Frank Wolf.  Congressman Wolf is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, a leading human rights advocate, and the architect of the Iraq Study Group.
