COLLEGE ADMISSIONS

Welcome

At Wilberforce, the goal of education is to cultivate adults who are equipped to care for, govern, and build God’s kingdom. For the majority of our students, education at the college level will be an important part of achieving this goal.

Finding a good fit for college, applying, and learning how to fund college is a process. Our school’s role is to provide guidance in this process, and to help inform and prepare students and families in each milestone.

We work closely with students and families to help identify colleges where our students will continue to develop as whole persons – intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Initial counseling meetings serve to help students identify colleges of interest and become familiarized with the application process, while later assisting students to complete the application process.

We provide detailed timelines for applying with key dates and deadlines. We also offer up-to-date materials and resources. Wilberforce also hosts college application and Financial Aid workshops. Students may also attend sessions hosted by college representatives that visit the school.

The first and most important step in the process is to fully engage in the Wilberforce community of learners.

Teacher Recommendations

Most college applications require at least one and possibly two teacher recommendations. We recommend all students ask two teachers for recommendations. A teacher recommendation focuses specifically on a student’s academics and classroom contributions. A few considerations when choosing teachers are listed below:

  • It is most important to ask teachers who know you well and can speak sincerely to your academic endeavors and personal qualities.
  • Typically, students will ask teachers who taught them during Junior year since they had you most recently in class. However, you may ask 9th or 10th grade teachers if they will be teaching you again during senior year.
  • If you are pursuing a specific field of study in college, it makes sense to ask a teacher who can speak to your academic abilities in that field. For example, if you plan to study mathematics or engineering, you should certainly ask your mathematics teacher to write for you.
  • Ask your teachers in person at least one month before a recommendation is due. We recommend asking teachers before the end of Junior year, so that they have ample time to write.
  • After a teacher agrees to write a recommendation for you, please complete the Teacher Recommendation Questionnaire and return it to your recommenders within 2 weeks.
