DUAL ENROLLMENT

Upper School students may now earn college credits.

We are pleased to announce that Wilberforce students may now earn college credits while at The Wilberforce School. Through partnership with Cairn University, we have implemented a dual enrollment program whereby Upper School students may choose to receive college credits for Wilberforce School courses. These are courses that our students are already taking; therefore no additional academic work is required to obtain college credits. Through this program, college credits are earned through Cairn University, and are accepted at many colleges and universities (they are considered transfer credits). However, each college sets its own transfer criteria, so be sure to check their policies for specifics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dual Enrollment?

An opportunity for Upper School students to earn college credit just by taking their normal classes at Wilberforce. Further explanation: Dual Enrollment can mean different things at different schools. Some high schools use dual enrollment to supplement their curriculum - they send their students to a local college to get access to classes the high school does not offer. That is NOT what Wilberforce dual enrollment is about. The way it works at Wilberforce is this: Cairn University has approved a list of Wilberforce's normal Upper School classes. They are offering college credit for these courses. Students do nothing other than take the normal courses at Wilberforce. Parents pay Cairn the cost of the credits, and students can carry those credits into college.

Which Wilberforce courses may be counted for college credit?
Wilberforce courses and credits earned can be found here.-PDF attached above

How do you register for the dual enrollment program?
Students may only register for courses they are taking during the current academic year.
Registration and payment must be complete by November 15, 2024.

Please follow these steps to register
  1. 1. Complete the online dual enrollment payment form here (payment is made during this process).
  2. 2. Complete the enclosed Cairn University application and return to Ed MacQueen.

How much does Dual Enrollment cost?
$85 per credit. Most dual enrollment courses are 3 credits, so the cost for most courses is $255.
Will college credits earned at The Wilberforce School be accepted at my child's college?
Each college/university has its own rules for counting dual enrollment credits. The answer to this question will depend on the specific college/university which your child chooses.

Given that each institution has its own distinctive criteria, we strongly recommend reaching out to the admissions office of the college or university for additional information before enrolling.

Can I register my child for dual enrollment credits retroactively?

No. Registration and payment must be completed by the deadline stated above for each academic year. Retroactive enrollment is not possible, i.e., it is not possible to receive college credits for Wilberforce School courses taken in a previous year.
Is additional work required to earn college credits?
No additional academic work will be required.
How do I receive certification for my child's college credits?
College credits are earned through Cairn University. Official Cairn University transcripts will provide evidence of your child’s college credits, and may be ordered here beginning in July, after the conclusion of each academic year. Be sure to enter Cairn in the Select School window.
