DEBATE

Our Debate program enhances students' analytical and rhetorical skills.

Students debate a wide variety of topics ranging from "Eliminate homework" to "The International Criminal Court is obsolete." Students research topics, build a case for and against the prompt, vet the strength of their arguments, and anticipate refutations. During practice and at the tournaments, students practice disagreeing passionately, yet civilly while honing the art of persuasion and exploration of truth.

Wilberforce Upper School Debate teaches students to discover arguments, organize and marshall their ideas, and present them persuasively. They use all the tools of logic and eloquence as they engage their opponents on constitutional questions, public policy, and philosophical dilemmas. Students learn to think clearly and speak boldly, yet courteously, in the face of opposition.
